Despite her name, Gibraltar spent much of her career on the Cape Station rather than in the Mediterranean. The cruiser served as a regional flagship, supported diplomatic presence around Africa, and later contributed guns to Shetland defenses. Her surviving details suggest thicker protection around ammunition hoists and the conning tower than the original class figures. Those variations reinforce the picture of the Edgar class as a family of evolving individual builds rather than a group of identical ships.
