HMS Garry carried about seventy people in a destroyer roughly seventy metres long and seven metres wide. Four Yarrow boilers supplied two vertical triple-expansion engines producing about 7,000 horsepower, while the ship carried 130 tons of coal. Her stated displacement was about 600 tons, rising to 671 tons fully loaded, and her official top speed was twenty-five knots. A crew this small lived and worked in close contact, requiring a cooperative relationship between officers and ratings. Personal knowledge of the people aboard was therefore part of commanding the ship.
