HMS Forth was pressing to catch Red Squadron ships during the 1892 manoeuvres when unfamiliar currents carried her into danger. The resulting court martial examined why the ship lacked the necessary tidal information. It also considered the illness of the navigating officer, who had handed his duties to Lieutenant George Warrender for forty-eight hours. Captain Henry Holton's prior experience did not shield him from responsibility for hazarding the ship. The final judgment praised some of his qualities but concluded that he should not again command one of the Queen's ships.
