HMS Flamingo was a Black Swan-class sloop built to naval standards. After the Second World War she was transferred to the rebuilding West German Navy and renamed Graf Spee. The modest sloop and the much larger prewar German namesake make an intentionally ironic pair. Her transfer shows how a wartime hull acquired new national service and a new symbolic identity after 1945.

HMS Flamingo became the West German Graf Spee
A Black Swan-class sloop's transfer and renaming turns postwar fleet reconstruction into a pointed echo of the prewar German warship.
