Chapter ยท 27:18-30:38

Fearless hunts German cruisers with the Harwich Force

Fearless survived an accidental passage across a minefield and then pursued SMS Stralsund after both sides misread the strength of the opposing force.

Notes

Assigned as a Harwich Force destroyer leader under Commodore Reginald Tyrwhitt, Fearless quickly entered North Sea operations. She accompanied the flotillas that found Konigin Luise and accidentally crossed the newly laid minefield without striking a mine. Stralsund carried twelve 4.1-inch guns and could carry 120 mines, making her a serious opponent even though Fearless's lookouts initially mistook the Magdeburg-class light cruiser for an armoured cruiser. The British held back while gathering destroyers, while the Germans mistook the cruiser-and-destroyer group for a full cruiser squadron. Once the British corrected their identification, Fearless pressed forward, but Stralsund withdrew before a decisive engagement. The reciprocal errors show how distant silhouettes could shape tactical decisions before either side understood the actual balance of force.
