Euryalus from fleet flagship to Gallipoli and the Red Sea

Euryalus served as a station flagship, training ship, Southern Force flagship, landing transport, gunfire ship, and unfinished minelayer.

Notes

After her delayed completion, Euryalus became flagship on the Australia Station and later a boys' training ship on the North America and West Indies Station. In August 1914 she flew Rear Admiral Arthur Christian's flag as the Southern Force guarded the eastern end of the English Channel. Her return to port for coal on 20 September left Aboukir, Hogue, and Cressy on patrol two days before their loss, after which Christian was relieved of command. At Cape Helles, Euryalus carried three companies of Lancashire Fusiliers and men of the Royal Naval Division toward W Beach, provided fire support for the landing, and later bombarded Ottoman positions during the Second Battle of Krithia. She later reinforced Egypt, refitted at Bombay, and bombarded barracks at Hodeida with Royal Indian Marine support. Four six-inch and four twelve-pounder guns were removed before she went to Hong Kong for conversion as a minelayer, but the work was unfinished when the war ended. The ship returned home in 1919 and was ultimately broken up in Germany, an ironic end to a cruiser with service across several imperial stations.
