The E class carries a larger gold transfer in 1940

Emerald carried a reported £58 million in gold in June 1940, and Enterprise transported another £10 million. The E-class cruisers were handling wartime finance as well as convoy escort.

Notes

Emerald repeated the gold-carrying role on 24 June 1940 with a much larger reported cargo valued at £58 million. Wartime changes in the gold price complicate a direct comparison with the 1939 shipment. Enterprise accompanied the movement with another £10 million in gold. The voyage shows older cruisers being trusted with the physical transfer of financial reserves during wartime.
