HMS Edgar carries relief crews to the China Station

HMS Edgar's career shows how a large cruiser could combine personnel transport, imperial presence, station relief, ceremonial duty, and later wartime service.

Notes

After long periods in ordinary, Edgar carried relief crews for four smaller vessels to Hong Kong through a chain of imperial ports. The cruiser had room for those additional personnel and appeared especially active while calling at Gibraltar, Malta, Aden, Colombo, and Singapore. The mission made use of accommodation and visibility, demonstrating how a warship could deliver logistics and political presence at the same time. Later boiler work, China Station relief service, and survival of a 1918 submarine attack extended that pattern of practical employment.
