HMS Duke of Edinburgh in distant service

HMS Duke of Edinburgh’s long range supported diplomacy, pursuit duties, Red Sea convoy protection, and later escort work across the First World War.

Notes

At ten knots, the ship’s 8,130-nautical-mile range suited long deployments and merchant-convoy speeds as well as battle-fleet service. Her career ran from peacetime diplomacy and the pursuit of Goeben and Breslau to Red Sea troop-convoy protection, action against a Turkish fort, and later North America and West Indies escort duty. Her wartime alterations show the Navy retaining the 6-inch battery as a cruiser-fighting weapon while moving unusable lower-deck guns. A later tripod and fire-control director further show how an Edwardian cruiser could be adapted for wartime patrol and escort demands.
