HMS Dictator passed through confined water with very little clearance, dropped an anchor, and used it to swing her broadside toward a Danish-Norwegian frigate. Captain James Stewart attempted the maneuver with a 64-gun third rate during the Battle of Lyngor. It demanded precise sail handling and navigation, while a mistake could have wrecked the ship or killed much of her crew. The anchor turn shows how aggressive ship handling could bring a ship of the line's broadside to bear in restricted waters.
