Dictator uses her anchor to bring a broadside onto Najaden

Dictator follows Najaden into narrow waters, grounds her bow, and uses the anchor cable to position her broadside against the trapped frigate.

Notes

The British advance through the archipelago continued after Podargus grounded while leading with a pilot familiar with the waters. Captain Stewart left Flamer to assist her, and the two brigs faced gunboats and a shore battery. Najaden retreated farther into Lyngør Sound, where her captain again expected the narrow waters to deter pursuit. Dictator followed, dropped an anchor behind her, and ran her bow onto the shore. The anchor cable provided leverage to turn the ship's broadside toward Najaden at close range. The frigate could not turn to bring her own broadside to bear. Stewart's dispatch records a twelve-mile passage, in places scarcely wide enough for the studding-sail booms, with Calypso following Dictator into the attack. Najaden was battered into a burning wreck, the brigs struck, and some of the gunboats were sunk. Accepting the navigational risk allowed a ship of the line to attack an opponent trapped in the confined sound.
