HMS Defender's Formosa Strait patrol

HMS Defender's 1953-54 patrols around the Formosa Strait show a Daring performing a visible British signalling role while covering for cruisers in East Asia.

Notes

After reports that Chinese forces might invade Taiwan, HMS Defender was diverted from Yokosuka before her crew could take shore leave. A five-day patrol into the Formosa Strait became a continuing series of deployments from Hong Kong through June 1954. Her visible presence signalled British interest while officials assessed whether the threat would materialize. Defender later joined HMS Newcastle off Korea and also covered for Town-class cruisers while they underwent refit, making the back-pocket-cruiser argument concrete in East Asian service.
