Crescent began with Australia Station service and later became flagship on the North America and West Indies Station. The last completed member of the class repeatedly filled roles requiring endurance, command facilities, and reliability. She rescued the protected cruiser Hermes after a shaft failure and then returned for the coronation fleet review. Her later escort of Edward VII along the British coast shows how those qualities remained useful beyond the class's original combat concept.
