Ceylon's early sale to Peru and the debate over the Tigers

Selling a recently modernized cruiser surprised Ceylon's captain and raised competing explanations involving Peru's offer and the Tiger class.

Notes

Ceylon returned to Portsmouth in 1959 and was sold to Peru soon after her modernization. Her last captain, Frank Twist, objected strongly to disposing of her so quickly. Possible explanations include the price Peru offered and a desire to protect the Tiger class from comparison with useful, relatively young alternatives. These remain competing interpretations of the sale. Renamed Coronel Bolognesi, Ceylon remained on Peru's naval list until 1982 and was towed to Taiwan for scrapping in 1985. The continued foreign service of Ceylon and Newfoundland also helped provide parts for the Tigers during the 1970s.
