HMS Buttercup's multinational wartime and postwar career

Buttercup moved through British, Belgian, and Norwegian service before a long civilian career in fisheries, survey, polar, and whaling work.

Notes

HMS Buttercup began under Royal Navy control with a largely Belgian crew and later served with Norwegian forces. Her wartime work included convoy escort, and she carried the Norwegian high command back to Oslo after liberation. Norway then purchased the ship and adapted her for fisheries protection, hydrographic survey, and polar duties. Sold into civilian use, she continued as a whaler until 1969, demonstrating the durable commercial foundations of the design.
