Blanche's early career included First and Fourth Destroyer Flotilla leadership, damage after striking a rock in the Pentland Skerries, and transfer to the Third Battle Squadron. She patrolled off Ireland during the 1914 Home Rule crisis. Severe weather in the Pentland Firth caused further damage while she operated under orders connected with the German bombardments of Yorkshire ports. After joining the Fourth Battle Squadron, she patrolled the Norwegian coast during the 1916 hunt for the German commerce raider Greif, though she did not make contact before it was sunk.
