Chapter · 35:50-39:10

HMS Bellona mirrored her sister’s war service and mine work

Bellona served with several battle squadrons, survived a destroyer collision, was present at Jutland without firing, and joined Boadicea in the Kattegat mine operations.

Notes

Laid down in June 1908, launched in 1909, and completed in February 1910, Bellona was the second and final ship of the class. She later served with several battle squadrons. A 1914 collision with the destroyer HMS Leader seriously damaged both ships but caused no loss of life. She was positioned at the rear at Jutland and, like Boadicea, never had an opportunity to fire. After conversion to a minelayer, Bellona joined the February 1918 operations at the Kattegat entrance. The reported total remains uncertain at 280 to 306 mines across four missions. After the war she entered reserve at Devonport and was bought for scrap in 1921.
