HMS Bee and the cost of one-for-one replacement

HMS Bee was scrapped after HMS Scorpion replaced her, leaving no reserve when the newer gunboat was lost to Japanese surface forces.

Notes

HMS Bee was sold for scrap at Shanghai in March 1939 after HMS Scorpion replaced her. Scorpion belonged to the newer Dragonfly class, but Japanese cruiser and destroyer forces sank her in February 1942. The case is explicitly framed with hindsight: bringing Bee home would have preserved another useful inshore hull. One-for-one replacement reduced resilience because the discarded predecessor could no longer cover the loss of the new ship.
