Chapter ยท 16:25-17:46

Active shifts from the Humber to Dover, Queenstown, and Gibraltar

Active's later assignments show how a flotilla leader could move among Grand Fleet support, Channel defence, Irish coastal command, and Mediterranean service.

Notes

After Jutland, Active led the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla from Immingham on the Humber and repeatedly sailed to support the Grand Fleet, although it never met the High Seas Fleet again. She next joined the Sixth Destroyer Flotilla at the Dover Patrol and was present, but not engaged, during two German destroyer attacks. By January 1918 she was the flagship of the southern division of the Coast of Ireland Station at Queenstown. A Mediterranean deployment placed her at Gibraltar by April, where she remained through the end of the war. Her movement into reserve in February 1919 and sale in April 1920 closed a career built around adaptable command and screening work rather than headline combat.
