Abercrombie commissioned in May 1915 and sailed directly for the Dardanelles. Rather than serving the Western Front, the class leader remained in the Eastern Mediterranean for the rest of the war. Its guns supported operations around the Dardanelles, across the Aegean, and in Palestine. That deployment matched the monitor's strengths: a shallow-draft heavy-gun ship could move among several littoral campaigns without needing battle-fleet speed. Abercrombie survived that service and decommissioned in 1919.
