Uganda's Canadian crew and uneven preparation for the Pacific

Uganda entered Canadian service with a nationally drawn crew and strong radar, but inadequate ventilation and fresh water for tropical duty.

Notes

Uganda transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy at Charleston on Trafalgar Day, 21 October 1944, while retaining her existing name. Captain Rollo Mainguy and Commander Hugh Pullen were among the officers who later reached senior naval rank, while aircraft-recognition officer John Robarts later became Ontario's premier. The crew came from every Canadian province and Newfoundland. Further modifications and a voyage through the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean brought her to the British Pacific Fleet. Her Charleston refit gave her some of the fleet's best radar and aircraft-identification equipment. Living conditions were much less satisfactory because ventilation and fresh-water capacity had not been adequately adapted for the tropics.
