HMAS Sydney's ambush at Cape Spada

Captain John Collins repositioned HMAS Sydney to cover a destroyer sweep, then used radio silence to turn the Italian pursuit into an ambush.

Notes

Four Allied destroyers were conducting an offensive sweep north of Crete against Axis shipping while Sydney and HMS Havock provided distant cover. Captain John Collins judged that the destroyers were likely to attract an Italian response and shifted Sydney roughly one hundred miles toward their operating area. He maintained radio silence, so neither side initially knew the cruiser had moved. When two Italian light cruisers attacked, the destroyers turned northeast at high speed and broadcast the contact. Their withdrawal led the pursuing Italians toward Sydney's new position. The episode shows how initiative and anticipation could create a local advantage even when a captain departed from the position expected by higher command.
