HMAS Sydney protects Australia's early wartime operations

Sydney escorts submarines, supports the capture of German Pacific possessions, and joins the first troop convoy to Egypt.

Notes

Sydney's celebrated Australian arrival was followed by a voyage escorting the new submarines AE1 and AE2 from Singapore. At the outbreak of war she joined Australia in covering operations against German colonial assets under a maritime version of Britain's Napoleonic strategy. Sydney then joined Melbourne with the first Australian and New Zealand troop convoy bound for Egypt. That convoy duty placed her within reach of Emden's raid on Direction Island when the station transmitted its emergency signal.
