A model of Shoalhaven aboard Castlemaine preserves a connection with Australia's later frigates and their crews. Shoalhaven was a River-class frigate completed to an Australian-modified Bay-class design suited to local building capabilities. Launched in December 1944 but commissioned in May 1946, she entered service too late for World War II. Her escort of United Nations troop and ammunition shipping on 1 July 1950 became the first Australian operation of the Korean War. She escorted fourteen convoys during July and August, performed blockade and anti-submarine duties, and bombarded coastal targets. Although due to return home for refit, she remained until Warramunga arrived on 6 September so that Australia maintained a ship in the operation. Her battle honour was Korea 1950; a later deployment in 1954 involved monitoring the armistice.
