HMAS Hawkesbury returned from reserve for atomic-test support

HMAS Hawkesbury's Pacific honours, repatriation work, reserve period, and 1952 atomic-test support show the class adapting to wartime and postwar assignments.

Notes

HMAS Hawkesbury was built in Sydney and carried the motto 'Equality, not servitude.' She earned Pacific, New Guinea, and Borneo honours during wartime service. After helping repatriate troops and move supplies, she decommissioned in 1947 but remained a potentially useful reserve asset. The Royal Australian Navy reactivated her in 1952 to support British atomic tests in the Monte Bello Islands. She stayed in service for two more years after returning and was finally sold for scrapping in 1961. The chronology shows why a flexible escort could retain value long after its first campaign ended.
