Brisbane sustains training, exchanges, and submarine support

Brisbane tows a disabled submarine, visits Japan, and repeatedly returns from reserve to train the next generation of sailors.

Notes

On the voyage home Brisbane escorted six transferred J-class submarines and towed J5 when it developed problems. Her later service included grounding near Port Moresby and an exchange with the China Squadron. That deployment produced the first visit to Japan by a Royal Australian Navy ship, while later recommissionings kept Brisbane useful as a training ship attached to Flinders Naval Depot. A 1928 visit to Hawaii for the anniversary of James Cook's arrival shows those training cruises also serving a commemorative presence role. A final 1935 commission carried the crew of the new Sydney to Britain, ending the empire's last operational coal-fired cruiser career.
