Question

Why was HMAS Australia scuttled instead of being scrapped?

Short answer

Scuttling allowed a grand ceremonial farewell, with the Special Service Squadron present, rather than an undignified dismantling.

Notes

Scuttling gave HMAS Australia a formal farewell at sea. The ceremony included the British Special Service Squadron. The choice is presented as a more dignified ending than breaking the ship apart for scrap.
