The County-class HMAS Australia did not simply reuse the badge of the earlier battlecruiser Australia. Her badge instead drew on the Commonwealth coat of arms, including symbols of the six states and the Federation Star. When Britain planned to sell HMS Invincible to Australia in 1983, designers updated the badge for the intended carrier and added the battlecruiser’s motto, Endeavour. The resulting heraldry combined elements associated with the battlecruiser and the County-class cruiser for a third prospective namesake. Badges, mottos, and repeated ship names carried the institutional identity of Australia across three very different warship concepts.
