Historical study partly offset thin amphibious exercises

Clapp and Thompson used history, staff study, and wargaming to preserve skills that Norway exercises no longer rehearsed at realistic scale.

Notes

Norway training kept British forces familiar with cold-weather operations, but it did not exercise the amphibious system at the scale a brigade landing required. The underlying skills survived, but they were not as sharply honed as wartime conditions demanded. Michael Clapp and Julian Thompson partly compensated through historical reading, staff work, and wargaming with their teams. That preparation reduced the damage caused by thin exercises, but it was not a dependable institutional substitute for realistic collective practice.
