The practical costs of historical research

Historical research carries practical costs, including archive and museum access, publication permissions, travel, accommodation, and meals.

Notes

Historical research has operating costs as well as intellectual demands. Archives and museums depend on income, so researchers may pay for access and for permission to publish images from their collections. Visiting those collections can also require travel, accommodation, and meals. Staying on a friend's couch can replace a hotel, but meals still cost money. These costs accumulate before a book or article is finished and affect which projects are practical.
