From counterfactual design to historical possibility

The immediate post-battle question asks why the Royal Navy did not adopt a triple-turret battlecruiser arrangement when the underlying design ideas already existed.

Notes

Renown's use of available twin turrets offers one practical explanation for its six-gun arrangement. Existing materials, especially the twin mountings already at hand, shaped what could be built. Triple-turret designs had circulated in the Royal Navy long before Renown, however, leaving an earlier institutional choice to explain. The historical question concerns when and why British designers continued to prefer twins while another arrangement was available.
