Why historical conclusions remain open to revision

Expertise demonstrates research competence rather than omniscience, and new evidence can overturn conclusions that were reasonable a decade earlier.

Notes

Holding a doctorate does not mean knowing every fact or never making an error. A PhD instead certifies that its holder has completed research at a particular level. Historical conclusions remain provisional because new sources, discoveries, and analytical methods continue to appear. A claim that fit the available evidence five or ten years earlier may therefore need revision without implying that the original researcher was fraudulent or incompetent.
