How historians bridge gaps in evidence

A short account of historical method shows how inference should be tested against surrounding evidence.

Notes

Historical analysis often has two well-supported points with an uncertain link between them. A proposed connection must be tested against the surrounding evidence. Working through each inference helps prevent an apparently plausible bridge from concealing something that does not fit. First principles and experience both contribute to that analysis.
