Historical ambiguity and comparable warship data

The opening offers a practical lesson in naval historiography: incomplete records require careful judgment, while one consistent reference base makes ship comparisons more defensible.

Notes

Warship history cannot always supply a single complete answer. Documents may be missing, the people who understood the decisions are gone, and historians must distinguish small evidentiary gaps from major ones. The lecture uses Erich Gröner's German-warship reference work for its technical figures, so displacement, speed, and other measurements come from one compiler's consistent method. That choice does not remove uncertainty, but it gives the later class comparisons a common baseline.
