Why Admiral Hipper and Lützow made an awkward team

Different speeds, ranges, secondary batteries, propulsion systems, and intended roles made the two German cruisers difficult to combine effectively.

Notes

Lützow combined six 11-inch guns with a stated top speed of 28 knots and a range of 10,000 nautical miles at 20 knots. Admiral Hipper carried eight 8-inch guns and could make 32 knots, but her stated range was only 6,800 nautical miles. Operating together reduced Hipper's speed advantage while the ships retained different main and secondary batteries. Separate groups within one force made more sense than expecting the cruisers to complement each other closely during a coordinated attack. Hipper's high-pressure boilers introduced handling and reliability concerns of their own. Lützow's diesel propulsion offered a different response, but eight engines drove two shafts through complex precision gearboxes, with four engines connected to each shaft.
