Britannia quickly proved too small for a curriculum that covered mathematics, sailing, ship handling, engineering, and history. HMS Hindustan joined the establishment in 1865 with more classrooms and accommodation. The 80-gun Hindustan is described as a second rate, though the weight assigned to her armament could support a third-rate classification. Separating work between the ships also let cadets practise communication and control problems closer to those aboard working warships.
