Chapter ยท 20:24-22:38

Herbert Richmond as admiral and historian

Richmond's naval career and historical writing prompt a distinction between naval history and the wider field of imperial history.

Notes

Herbert Richmond moved from a successful naval career into historical scholarship, but his longer work repeatedly returns to Walter Raleigh. His Cambridge chair also helps distinguish naval history from the broader imperial emphasis that the post later acquired. Britain's Glorious Navy is a multi-author volume whose specialist contributors complement Richmond's own chapter. Its editorship by Reginald Bacon and foreword by Edward Evans also make the volume a guide to contemporary naval voices.
