Henry Trollope entered the Royal Navy in April 1771 at the age of 14. As a captain he commanded HMS Kite, Rainbow, Glatton and Russell, among other vessels, and is described here as one of the critical officers at the Battle of Camperdown. The account links the end of his sea employment to an earlier dispute with Lord St Vincent connected with the Channel Fleet. St Vincent is portrayed as unwilling to forgive the quarrel, even though Trollope's service record was too strong for him to be placed on the yellow list. Trollope stayed on the naval list and resisted retirement. He rose from Rear Admiral of the Red through Vice Admiral of the White and Red, Admiral of the Blue, and finally Admiral of the White. No further sea command accompanied those promotions.

Henry Trollope: promotion without further sea command
The account links Trollope's lack of further sea commands to an earlier dispute with Lord St Vincent connected with the Channel Fleet, even as Trollope continued to gain flag rank.
