Chapter · 38:28-43:53

Henry Pelly and the rapid creation of a reliable crew

Coronel forced Tiger into service before a normal working-up, but Henry Pelly's broad command and staff experience turned the new crew into one of the battlecruiser force's most reliable teams.

Notes

Coronel and Vice-Admiral Maximilian von Spee's East Asia Squadron created the urgency that cut short Tiger's trials and training. Henry Pelly nevertheless brought the ship rapidly into fighting order. His career spanned battleship commands, Invincible, contract-built ship supervision, Admiralty staff work, and service across the Beresford-Fisher political divide, which made him a trusted and flexible officer. He preferred captain-level and shore responsibilities to a conventional drive for high command, yet later served as an admiral in Gibraltar, Egypt, and Portsmouth. Pelly commanded Tiger from before commissioning through Jutland and established the crew practices that made an initially unready ship unusually dependable.
