Henry Parry's career included command roles in two Commonwealth naval services and expertise in anti-submarine warfare. He had been placed in charge of anti-submarine work at Portland in 1936, making him one of the service's relatively uncommon specialists in the field. His assignment to the New Zealand Division was meant in part to improve understanding of the Japanese submarine threat, which the Royal Navy regarded seriously. The posting also placed an officer of future flag rank and considerable technical judgment within Harwood's cruiser force. War ultimately found him commanding HMS Achilles off South America for the River Plate action rather than studying Japanese submarines in the Pacific.
