The expedition carried a judge advocate as part of the new colony's legal machinery. Convict Henry Cable used that civil court to sue Alexander's master, Duncan Sinclair, for possessions lost during the voyage. Cable won £15 in restitution. The case gave a transported prisoner an enforceable claim against a shipmaster and became the first civil court case heard in Australia.
