Henderson links carriers, aircraft, and fleet defense

Third Sea Lord Reginald Henderson treats carrier design and aircraft requirements as two sides of the same fleet air-defense problem.

Notes

Henderson had commanded carrier aviation and was wrestling with how a fleet could continue operating under air attack. As Third Sea Lord, he faced carrier and aircraft design as two sides of the same problem. A carrier planned without reference to its first and later aircraft generations would be poorly matched to the force it was meant to sustain. Fighter doctrine therefore had to influence the ship before either design was fixed.
