Henderson's larger L70 destroyer proposal

The unbuilt L70 would have combined the Tribals' gun power with a fleet destroyer's ten torpedo tubes.

Notes

Henderson oversaw the Tribal and J, K and N designs as well as work on the smaller escort types. The L and M classes were the last of his destroyer designs to reach construction. One drawing of the larger L70 proposal would have carried four twin gun mounts, numerous pom-poms and two quintuple torpedo launchers. A larger hull also allowed heavier mountings with better balance and greater gun elevation. Fits varied with the drawing, but the aim was to combine Tribal gun power with a fleet destroyer's torpedo broadside in a design that could be built in volume.
