Henderson, Goodall, and a fleet sustainable far from Britain

Admiral Henderson and Goodall judged fleet design by whether ships could be maintained and supported at great distance from British yards.

Notes

Admiral Henderson and Goodall designed from exercises and operational experience rather than from platform specifications alone. One of their central requirements was a fleet that could be maintained and supported far from the United Kingdom. Forward aviation-support ships fit that logic by carrying repair and maintenance capacity into distant theaters. Yet this sustainment emphasis did not lead them to standardize destroyer and secondary-gun calibers. Carrier support, ammunition variety, and fleet design were parts of the same logistical problem.
