Chapter · 3:23-10:19

Reginald Henderson built the Royal Navy's wartime fleet

Henderson's work in naval aviation and six years as Third Sea Lord made him the central organizer behind much of the modern fleet inherited in 1939.

Notes

Henderson helped define the senior aircraft-carrier post and then became its first flag officer, effectively writing the role before emerging as its strongest candidate. He later became Third Sea Lord, responsible for turning strategic requirements into ships, infrastructure, and technology. His unusually long tenure gave him detailed knowledge of the fleet's designs and industrial foundations, while his promotion suggested a path toward an operational command and eventually First Sea Lord. In this account, most modern Royal Navy ships entering service around the outbreak of war bore Henderson's influence, with the 14-inch armament of the King George V class treated as a notable exception.
