Helicopters multiply Warspite's roles at Narvik

Several recoverable aircraft let Warspite scout ahead, spot gunfire, and guard against submarines at the same time.

Notes

At Narvik, HMS Warspite historically launched a single floatplane for reconnaissance because recovery was difficult and the ship carried only one. A helicopter fit of three or four aircraft could divide the work among a forward scout, a gunfire spotter, and a rear patrol watching for submarines. None of them would require the battleship to stop for recovery in confined waters. Detecting and attacking the U-boats that fired ineffective torpedoes at Warspite could remove experienced German submariners who later trained others. Rotary-wing endurance improves a ship's awareness and lets scarce aircraft cover several simultaneous missions.
