An ASW helicopter can perform the role once assigned to hunter-killer groups detached from a convoy screen. The frigate continues its escort role with a towed array and rocket-assisted torpedoes while the helicopter moves out to prosecute a distant contact. Additional sonobuoys or an active torpedo may force the submarine to manoeuvre or launch countermeasures. That response can confirm that the uncertain sound below is a submarine and give the wider force a better target solution.
