Hein's VOC service in the spice trade

Hein's Dutch East India Company service combined military expeditions, fort building, and efforts to dominate the clove market.

Notes

Hein spent most of his roughly five years of Dutch East India Company service in the spice islands. Military expeditions and fort construction supported the company's commercial ambitions there. Its aim was to dominate spice purchases while other buyers still operated in the market, a position described here as pursuing monopsony. The distinction concerns buyer power and the limits of the company's ability to exclude competitors.
