Chapter · 15:35-18:33

Hein as shipowner, politician, and Venetian captain

Between company expeditions, Hein married into a prosperous family, owned a vessel, sailed for Venice, and held municipal office in Rotterdam.

Notes

After returning from Asia in 1612, Hein married the widow of a friend and colleague. The couple bought a house for 2,900 guilders and owned a vessel that someone else captained while Hein commanded a larger ship. His wife's nephew, a senior Rotterdam burgomaster, sought a council position for him, illustrating the family connections behind municipal patronage. Hein first took his larger ship into Venetian service for operations in the Adriatic, then returned overland. He subsequently became an alderman in Rotterdam despite not being a citizen of the city. He is portrayed as an inattentive councillor who preferred sailing and supplied the burgomaster with a dependable vote.
