The early TF30 engine created serious launch and handling limitations, but the overall concept was a fighter able to sustain distant combat air patrols with a large weapons load. Outer air defense converts distance into decision and engagement time. Intercepting a smaller number of missile-carrying bombers before launch is far less demanding than stopping the much larger missile salvo they could release closer to the fleet. Range and endurance therefore reduce the force required of the task group's inner defensive layers.

Why a heavy fighter expands the carrier's defensive bubble
Range, endurance, sensors, and weapon load let the Tomcat attack bombers before missile release, buying the fleet time and reducing the number of targets its defenses must defeat.
